Welcome 2013!

Eco-Office Gals

Out with the Old: I don’t enjoy the New Years Eve blow out very much, maybe I’m just getting old? The plan if I have my way, is a quiet night with the family. I’m not much for drinking, I don’t get into the backyard fireworks, I don’t like being on the roads to go see a nice firework display. Call me a bah-humbug of NYE.

The Big Finish

Loosely Speaking

Right here in public I am vowing to finish at LEAST 6 of my works in progress before starting any new knitting in 2013. Some of the pieces I have to choose from in narrowing down to six are delightful. I haven’t lost interest, I just needed something different to do at the time. Here are a few of those in-the-works pieces I’ll attempt to complete: Panoramic Shawl , by one of my favorite designers, Hannah Fettig, in beautiful blue organic merino from Swans Island.

Happy Holidays!

Small Business Labs

We had an interesting discussion last week on how small business owners define success. We explained they tend to define success as meeting personal goals and objectives. We also explained that most small business owners aren't interested in building or running a high growth business. We used our firm, Emergent Research, as an example. The owners (my wife and I) consider Emergent Research a lifestyle business.   This is not to say we don't work hard - we do.

Ian's Messy Desk

Project planning (Photo credit: Wikipedia) Each January 1 my wife and I head for a quiet table at a local coffee shop and set some goals for the upcoming year. We begin the process by reviewing what we set out to accomplish in the year past: to look at our successes and failures. It would be easy for us to spend the time focusing on the things we didn’t get done.

More Workers with Autism Entering Workplace

On The Job

Autism is a subject that often promotes a great deal of debate. The causes. The solutions. Employers are now entering that discussion, as they will be seeing more job applicants with autism spectrum disorder. It's an issue I looked at in my latest Gannett/USA Today column. Peace on Earth and Goodwill toward men are common sentiments at this season of the year. There are times when, Christmas is too commercialized, seems to join that list. Those who complain about losing the true meaning of Christmas spend more time shopping than they do with family, friends or at church.
