A few years ago I was working as a PA to a senior board director in an organisation full of project managers, engineers and specialist technicians. There were a large number of administration and support staff but we certainly didn’t make up the bulk of the business. As is often the case renumeration was structure around the staff who made the business money (or the folks who made the business more efficient and thus made the business money).

It happened again yesterday, so I guess I need to write about this AGAIN. I went to a restaurant, and a friendly server named "Matt" came to take our order. He smiled pleasantly as the six people at the table gave their order. He never once reached for a pen or paper. He just nodded pleasantly as we gave him our orders. Then, of course, it happened.

I like going places, but I don’t like what it takes to get there all that much. I’m sure I’m not alone here. But I do spend time some away from home, as shown in the screenshot below from my TripIt profile. I’ve been using TripIt for four years. I average about 12 trips per year and in 2015 I’ve done less than half of that. Even still, my past travels have shaped how I travel now and one of the things I pride myself on is “walking the productive walk” as much as I talk the talk.
