Their survey asks: "In the last year, did you earn money by selling something online?" " 18% of adult Americans surveyed said yes. 8% of the survey respondents said yes to this. But 60% of those who said yes said they performed tasks online like completing surveys or doing data entry. They're not.

One recent survey showed 54 percent of Americans say they would have trouble paying their bills if they were forced to go without more than two paychecks and 20% say they would have trouble if they missed one paycheck.    Most Americans also don't have strong financial reserves. .  This makes gig work attractive.

  An interesting sidelight to the report is Pew's definitions of age cohorts. Somewhat surprisingly there are no official demographic cohort definitions, so different groups use different definitions. Obviously, the total size of Gen Y is larger by our definition than Pew's. Pew's are to the right.

  Gallup has a broad definition of gig work. " The Gallup chart below (click to enlarge) shows these how these two groups responded to a series of job and career related survey questions compared to traditional job holders.  This includes a quarter of all full-time workers (24%) and half of all part-time workers (49%).

The Guardian's  US millennials feel more working class than any other generation  covers data from the General Social Survey showing that the number of millennials (born 1980 to 2000) who consider themselves middle class has fallen from 45.6% in 2002 to 34.8% But I digress.

  Children are definitely a long term commitment. They may change their minds as they get older, but their survey responses coupled with birth rate data is a pretty clear signal birth rates may stay low. We think people are responding in a similar way.   They also reduce your agility and flexibility.

 Based on their survey, the top 6 motivations for not having children are: 1) I love our life, our relationship, as it is, and having a child won't enhance it.  But there are definitely parallels between the motivations of the childless and the motivations of independent workers.

Multiple income streams from multiple jobs or tasks: This is the more classic definition of a portfolio career.
