.  We don't have access to the survey questions, so we' don't know how they defined "side job" But it must have been a broad definition to get to 92 million.  To capture people working on a 2nd job less than once a month requires a broad definition.  Most do it only a few times a month or less.

.  As we pointed out last week , there's a lot confusion around what is and is not "coworking"   We still like the definition we've used since 2010.  But This is leading to new definitions of coworking, or at least the expansion of the definition to include a wide variety of spaces.

Interestingly, drop by workspaces such as restaurants don't meet our definition of a coworking space.    So while they don't meet our definition of coworking, they are valuable additions to the shared workspace industry. And while these spaces may not provide support for networking, it still happens naturally.

SIA does not include job boards or social networks in their definition because they don't enable or support work arrangements through to their completion. We like the SIA's taxonomy and definitions and plan to use them going forward.

  An interesting sidelight to the report is Pew's definitions of age cohorts. Somewhat surprisingly there are no official demographic cohort definitions, so different groups use different definitions. Obviously, the total size of Gen Y is larger by our definition than Pew's. Pew's are to the right.

SIA has a broad definition of gig work that is very similar to one we use. As a note, Staffing Industry Analysts’ definition excludes firms such as Airbnb and Zipcar that are part of the “sharing economy” but not part of the gig economy. Statement-of-work consultants employed by a consulting firm, 1.9%.

  The spaces were also definitely low end. The early coworking spaces (circa 2008) were targeted at a niche (freelancers and other independent workers) that was considered unattractive and inconsequential to the commercial office space industry, including the executive suites industry sub-sector.

To us, this definition means these people are actually "working" in the gig economy and are not just hobbyists, holding occasional garage sales, just having fun, or killing time.  We're not suggesting the definitions these studies used are wrong. They're not. Pretty much everyone said they were way too high.

Commerce's department report  Digital Matching Firms: A New Definition in the “Sharing Economy” Space  is, in our opinion, a pretty balanced view of sharing/digital matching firms and their growing economic role. While I like Commerce's definition, I doubt "digital matching services" will broadly catch on.

Regular readers may have noticed Yardi found substantially fewer U.S. coworking spaces (1,166) than we found as part of our recent U.S. coworking forecast (4,043). Yardi only looked at 20 major markets while we looked at the entire U.S.

The Mastercard report is a little hazy about what they are including and not including in their sharing economy definition. This would mean it would be  16 times as large in 2025 as it is today. That's a lot of projected growth. They are also a bit unclear about what geographies they are including.
