Check their calendar Familiarize yourself with what your boss has scheduled for the week and beyond. Is there anything you need to do to help them? Make travel arrangements? How many nights?

I threw it in the garbage. I hung up by mistake. Sorry, I didn't get their number? I don't recall anything about that file.

if they are going to a conference do you need to register them? Oftentimes you are able to book them a room in the hotel the conference is being held at. if they require a hotel room, what are their room requirements? Smoking/Non-Smoking, King or Queen bed etc.)

For instance if I need to register my boss for a conference by a certain date and I have a hard copy registration form that needs to be faxed I would it in my Wait Bin and set a Task reminder for the day before I need to send it. My Task would read something like "WAITBIN: Register Mr. Brown for Australia Conference."

I remember helping with a conference at another place I worked and as we approached the day of the conference we noticed that the attendance was low. I got a geography lesson when he got back. It was discovered that someone in our Marketing Department forgot to send the invitations out.

Networking at a conference does little good if you never speak with the person after the event. If you meet someone at an Administrative Assistant conference, for example, make sure to follow up with that contact within a week or two after the event. If you discussed a need at the conference, be sure to address it.

When my boss asked me for a coffee, he felt he needed to explain to me that he normally would never ask his assistant to get him a coffee, but he was just starting a conference call that was going to be a long haul and he forgot so he quickly asked me to get him one. Although after that first cup he never asked me again.

As wonderful as online learning can be, going to a live conference or seminar with other assistants is something that you should try to do a few times a year. All you need is to put some time aside and close your door, or put some earphones on, and plug into your computer and learn. I think I am just not used to having to think about me.
