As a result, self-employment has grown enormously in the last decade, and the trend shows no signs of slowing. Much of the recent growth has been driven by the expansion of the highly skilled freelance sector.

In other words, these are good jobs. We've long used craft brewing as an example of the rise of niche businesses.

This is up from 13% in 2008, and 8.7% The UK's Office of National Statistics (ONS) released a report showing that self-employment in the UK is the highest its been since they started tracking it 40 years ago.   Their data shows the UK has 4.6 million people working for themselves, with 15% of workforce self-employed.

 The upper class has also taken a hit, dropping from 21% in 2008 to 15% in early 2014. .     Over the same time frame the percent of Americans saying they are lower or lower-middle class rose 15 points, from 25% to 40%. The decline in the middle class has profound business impacts.

In 2008 the University of Miami started a student entrepreneurship program called Launch Pad.    Unlike most academic entrepreneurship programs, it's not a major or set of courses.    Miami's Launch Pad is housed in their career center and positions entrepreneurship as an alternative to a traditional job.

.  Most of the data on non-profits pre-date the recession, so we don't have a good sense of its impact on the number of non-profits.    Donation data is more current and fell 5.6%   It likely fell again in 2009.    But we don't think this resulted in a decline in the number of small non-profits.
