When there’s a wished-for client or a client you work with that you've put time and energy into, hearing that s/he's decided to go in a different direction is disappointing. Disappointment is a completely understandable response to the situation, too. ?. What’s not reasonable or smart is to think that a client saying no to working with you is saying something’s wrong with you.

Slow waaaaaaaaay down in your interview process. Why? Because one of the worst things you can have happen in your practice is to leap into a new relationship with a client, only to realize in fairly short order that you made a huge mistake and need to get out of the relationship. That is, in all respects, the business version of the quickie Vegas wedding (a la Britney Spears—who needed an annulment just a bit more than two days after her wedding in 2004!).
