Moxie Tip 144: The Far Side of Relationship Problems

Virtual Moxie

If you have a good relationship with a client and there's a problem with the relationship, it's a no brainer to dive in and clean things up and move forward. But if the relationship is rocky and there's a problem, you're far more likely to want to throw in the towel than work through it. In those moments, work. Work to make it right. Work to work it out.

Moxie Tip 175: Use Your Words

Virtual Moxie

When you first start out, it's helpful to model the language used by industry leaders or other VAs you admire. But if you’ve been in biz for more than a year, you need to find your own voice. Talk about what you do & offer in your OWN way; don't copy. You may think to yourself, "I can't say it better than this VA or that VA does," but you can. If you want to attract clients to yourself, you can't do that with other people's words.

Moxie Tip 142: Sharing v. Oversharing

Virtual Moxie

One of the best ways to manage client expectations and fears is by sharing, being in touch, and telling them about yourself more than you may think you need to. But there's a distinction between sharing and oversharing, and you need to understand where the line is. "My daughter is having problems in school and I'm not going to be in the office Thursday and Friday as planned," is sharing.

Pinterest and Tumblr Make Strides to Help Users Feel Safe

Virtual Moxie

I was super pleased to wake up Saturday morning to an email from Pinterest letting subscribers know that they’d changed their Terms of Service, to, among other things, remove the “right” to sell things pinned, and to “modify” things pinned, except to reformat. Other changes they made to the TOS can be read here , but the other one that's super-interesting to me is that they've taken a stand about not allowing pins that encourage self-harm or self-abuse.

Virtual Moxie

If you think clients really care about your techie skills, think again. What they really want (and need!) is your brain, critical thinking, creativity, knowledge, experience, expertise, and network.

Moxie Tip 140: One Step Beyond

Virtual Moxie

Clients ask questions. Unfortunately, they often mean to ask far more complex ones than they do. For instance, "Do you know a good SEO person" isn't really a yes/no question, or even a "Yes, Jane Doe at www.janedoe.com," but a question that's asking you, "Do you know a good SEO person? If so, what's great about her, have you worked directly with her and what was your expeirence, why should I consider working with her, and how do I get in touch with her?".

"Divorcing" Clients

Virtual Moxie

My deep thanks to Tami for suggesting this topic--it's a goodie! Divorcing, firing, ending the relationship with, telling them to eff off--by whatever name you give it, this is one aspect of owning a VA practice that often creates a lot of anxiety for people. I think the reason for that is often because we don't like confrontation, and we see this kind of conversation in that light.
