Until Next Year!

Virtual Moxie

As we roll forward toward the Christmas holiday, I've decided to take the last two weeks off--including from writing VMoxie. I've said it before, blogging makes it possible for us to pre-load posts, so that we can continue to appear productive even when away from our businesses--but I don't find that smart because, to me, it sends a message that says we can't really be away.

Moxie Tip 91: You're Not Costco

Virtual Moxie

People go to Costco to save money by buying in bulk. Costco makes that work because they sell so freaking much that they make up money in the sheer quantity sold. They also have immense buying power as a result of how much they sell across the chain which results in lower prices to them which they can pass on to you. But you? You're just a little person sitting in a home office.

Moxie Tip 90: What do Higher Standards Bring?

Virtual Moxie

The higher your standards, the easier things get with your practice, because with higher standards come higher-quality clients. Want to get rid of crap clients? Stop settling in your practice. Raise your standards to see more of what you want.

Why Most People Lie

Virtual Moxie

It's easier. At least on the surface. In the moment, it feels safer than telling the truth, than risking saying something other than what you assume the person you're talking with wants to hear. We don't like disappointing others. We don't like being uncomfortable. We don't like confrontation. And we don't like admitting we did something we probably wish we hadn't.

Moxie Tip 88: What Does Time Mean to You?

Virtual Moxie

People are generally on-timers (2pm means 2pm on the dot), or ish-timers (2pm means 2pm-ish. which could as easily end up being 230pm as it could be 2pm), and each frustrates the other. Know what you are, and remember to ask about it when interviewing PCs. Someone who is your opposite won't likely be a good client for you (or you a good VA for that client!).

Moxie Tip 87: Getting Along Without You

Virtual Moxie

Make sure your clients can get along without you at the drop of a hat, if needed, by keeping them in the loop about what you do, and exactly how you do it. Keep detailed process/procedure documents, update them regularly, and store them in a place where you and the client can access them with ease.

Why RFPs Suck

Virtual Moxie

An RFP (Request for Proposal) is a corporate and governmental construct used to get vendors or suppliers to bid on work, vying against unseen others who are also vying for the work. At its core, it's set up to favor, or give the upper hand to, the person who has the work and it commodtizes the worker's time and skill. It's not fair in the corporate/governmental arenas, but it's accepted as "the way things are done.".
